The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) recently released a report highlighting that the United States has emerged as India's largest source of Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPIs) for the fiscal year 2023-24.
As of March 31, 2024, the U.S. accounted for the highest number of registered FPIs, with 3,457 investors, followed by Luxembourg with 1,393 and Canada with 804.
The report shows a slight increase in the overall number of registered FPIs in India, rising from 11,081 in the previous year to 11,219.
It also indicates a significant rise in the Assets Under Custody (AUC) managed by these FPIs. As of March 2024, the AUC reached ₹69.5 lakh crore, marking a 42.8% increase from ₹48.7 lakh crore the previous year.
Equity assets comprised 92.2% of the total AUC, with the highest contributions coming from the United States (39.2%), followed by Singapore (9.8%) and Luxembourg (7.1%).
This substantial growth in AUC and the predominance of equity assets underscore the increasing confidence of foreign investors in India's financial markets.
SEBI's report also notes that the foreign portfolio investment in India during 2023-24 was the highest since 1992-93, reflecting India's strong economic fundamentals, fiscal consolidation, and stable financial environment, which have attracted record levels of foreign capital despite global uncertainties.
